ADVANTAGES OF THE PHILPROOF TRAP COVER
VERSATILITY -Philproof trap covers are designed to accommodate both Mk4 and Mk6 Fenn traps but I would recommend the Mk6 for most purposes. The covers can also be used for covering rat traps to protect non target species or be used for housing poison baits, again protecting non target species. They can be made blind at one end or the hole size can be varied to exclude some larger non target species. Available in black or natural coloured U.V. protected plastic.
Durability and portability - The covers are designed to be strong enough to withstand many years of wear and tear, yet are light enough to be carried in stacks of up to 20.
Catchability -The narrow entrance tunnel at either end guides the mustelid over the centre of the trap while the roof becomes lower immediately after the trap, making it more difficult for a stoat or weasel to jump over the trap.
Safety of non targets - The single trap cover in particular has enough length of tunnel prior to the trap to stop small children from gaining access to the trap. Similarly the tightness of the tunnel should prevent weka and kiwi from being accidentally trapped . The size of the entrance hole can be varied to restrict access.
SHOULD I CHOOSE A SINGLE OR DOUBLE TRAP COVER, AND HOW MANY? If you can afford to buy the second trap to go with the double cover then I would recommend this option, as trials to date indicate that a double set catches more stoats. There doesn't appear to be any significant difference in catch rate of ferrets when comparing single and double sets. The single trap cover has the advantage of a longer, narrower entrance tunnel at each end which better restricts non target (including small children) access to the trap. If you have a problem at a single site (e.g chicken house) one trap set should catch the offender, but having 2 or 3 strategically located will increase the chances of a early demise. If protecting a large bush area or similar, one trap set every 100-150m in a grid pattern should have a significant effect on the population.
